0525 Hours, July 31st, 2045 Cameroon, The Zone It was silent in the deep African rainforests of the Nigerian-Cameroon border. Sergeant Victor Adeyemi, a Nigerian Federation Army Commando, is about to lead his squad into The Zone. The attack was scheduled to begin at 0530 Hours, today. Though he trained and trained for almost 4 years, and fought skirmishes against GLA raiders, he was still feeling very anxious. This was the first time he ever ventured into GLA territory, and it may be his last. He looked at his watch and counted down the seconds before the attack is to begin. "Now!" He said into his radio, and suddenly, his entire squad jumped into action. Swiftly through the dark of night, his men moved through the forest, with him on point. "Dushka Alpha Four-Eight at three o-clock!" Victor aimed down his ACOG scope, and took out the dushka gunner with a single shot. His gun was silenced, so the only thing heard was the shriek of the fallen enemy. "Dushka Alpha Four-Niner at one o-clock, and Dushka Alpha Five-Six coming up at ten o-clock" His squad members took care of them, with a few bursts of silenced fire. So far the operation was going well. In only a few minutes, they have managed to break through the first GLA line of defence along the border. However, he knew the real challenge won't come until later. Once the GLA realises what is happening, they will come back full-force, and he needed to be ready for that. ----- Early in the morning, over 8 000 Nigerian Commandos stormed across the border into the jungles of West Cameroon. They were specialized commandos trained by over 400 Vietnamese Jungle Infantry volunteers from Vietnam. They were experts of the terrain, and knew how to cope and adapt. They were equipped with QBZ-99 silenced bull-pup assault rifles, silenced sniper rifles, and some supports had unsilenced machine guns. The commandos began their advance in the cover of darkness. They had around 2-3 hours before the sun would rise up. All equipped with silencers, they managed to sneak into position. Several dushka nests and stinger sites were located beforehand by scouts and spies, so the commandos could plan for them in advance. The point-man was the first one to fire a shot. One by one, dushka gunners fell. They would eliminate a nest, then quickly move on to the next one, not allowing the defenders to react. Within the first twenty minutes, the lightly-defended front line was in disarray.

05:43 - The Zone, CameroonThe Chinese had been more cautious than expected, taking their time to eradicate the defenses with precision and accuracy. This gave more time to set up, but was also concerning. If they were careful, they would see this plan coming and all would fall to pieces. 3 main bases were yet to be hit, but it would not be long. Each one had access to what appeared to be the entire GLA framework, but was in fact a localized version of the network, linked only to those three bases, acting as an incentive for forces to stay there, for a time at least. Twenty Rocket buggies were trained and ready to fire on each of the three bases. On top of this, demo traps had been placed within these practically unmanned bases. Most forces were outside these bases, comprised of around 8000 militia in various entrenchments, and 80 Scorpion tanks. It would be a shame if his elaborate plan never came to fruition, but this battle was too important to play around with. The sun was rising, and light began to fall on the open ground between Chinese and GLA forces. Not long now.

0620 - Cameroon, The Zone The Nigerian Federation Commandos continued their swift and silent advance through the Cameroon forest. They managed to cover a lot of ground in very few time. Everything was moving according to plan. Sergeant Victor Adeyemi lead his squad of ten men deeper into the rainforest, in southern Cameroon. "GLA stronghold spotted at two-oclock, range 1200.", said Sergeant Adeyemi, "Orders are to bypass under the cover of darkness. Make no sound, make no light, and do not enter open spaces!" His commando squad began swiftly moving to the left. Suddenly a Dushka net from their left began to open fire. "DUSHKA AT NINE OCLOCK!", cried one of his squadmates, but it was soon neutralized as well. The plan was going well. The Chinese leadership seemed much more competent in assaults than they did at the Battle of Kurmuk, only five years ago, but of course, that was under their old administration. As they passed by the GLA base, Adeyemi took note of the base's position, strength, and some of their troop positions. They would need this later in the assault. Meanwhile, the plan seems to be going well for the commandos. Already, they're five kilometers in, neutralized dozens of GLA nests, and lost none of his squadmates. The same was true for the entire front, with the Chinese suffering only a few dozen casulties. Everything was in order. Suddenly, Adeyemi heard a damning noise, one he recognized. "Beep-beep-beep!" "Balls!" He cried, as he looked to his right, just in time to see a bright explosion, with the shadow of two men thrown into the air. At this point, he realised that this was the maximum range of the listening outposts and scanners ability to detect demo traps and IEDs effectively. He had no encounters of demo-traps so far, meaning either the GLA knew of the range of the scanning equipment, or they were just lucky. Whatever the reason, it was also the commandos' job to deal with GLA demo-traps before the main assault begins. A voice came in through the radio. "8th Commando Battalion, your orders are to slow your advance, and disable demo-traps." "Roger!", said Adeyemi into his subordinate radio. The entire front slowed down to a slow-walking pace. "Demo trap spotted at five o-clock!", and his squadmate began firing. The barrel exploded, and suddenly they heard a hail of machine-gun fire from their front. They began to notice a huge GLA entrenched position to their direct front, with trenches and tanks. His squad began talking. "Our orders are to bypass GLA strongpoints. We should bypass this one to the right.", said Corporal Deyai "Negative!", said Private Stephens, "The GLA base is to our right, remember?" "What about to our left?", asked Deyai. "Another squad reported more GLA strongpoints to our left," stated Sergeant Adeyemi, "It seems the GLA have fortified positions stretching far along front. Our orders are to by-pass the GLA bases, and any other strongpoints we encounter." "Bypass this?" exclaimed Corporal Oni, "That seems completley unreasonable. For all we know, the GLA could have entrenched the entire front. I propose we stay here, and have the snipers pick off high-priority targets." "Good idea," replied Sergeant Ayedemi, "Corporal Mbanefo, and Private Sarr, secure prone positions to our immediate front, at 10 and 12 oclock from my position. Begin the elimination of targets to our front." "Roger, over" The two snipers in the squad took positions and tightened their silencers. High priority targets include officers, machine-gun operators, tank crews, and other snipers. Still an hour before the main attack, the GLA would soon get a taste of what it's like to be watched by a pin-point and deadly sniper.

"You must fight to the last man, only then will you have a chance. Our forces are equal in size, but they will be targeting our leaders. We have no such accuracy, nor the required finesse to do the same to them. As such, I am ordering a retreat of all but the outermost forces, so that our enemy may believe that we are still guarding the bases closely. I require 500 Militia and 6 Scorpions to defend, all other forces, regardless of rank, must retreat immediately to the second staging ground of our operation; we have no chance in a direct confrontation. The enemy may require a little more incentive to remain within the base." These orders were met with uncertainty and confusion, but soon enough the guardians had been picked, and 450 militia had been stationed in defensive positions on the outside of the base. 50 soldiers were put into civilian clothing, and put within the central base. At the fall-back position, further Demo traps were placed, with Scorpions and Militia deployed in a squared formation on the hilltop. Rocket Buggies set their sights on the base, and squad leaders were scattered within the forces, in standard militia uniforms. The battle proper was about to begin.

Though normally, China's first move would be to hack into the systems of its enemy before beginning operations, it was very difficult to do this against the GLA, because of their lack of computerized systems and sattelite communication. Being hidden in the rainforest, satelite surveillance was also unhelpful. Instead, the Chinese have to resort to much older methods, such as listening outposts and radio intercepts. These methods are not as effective. The Chinese really had no idea that the GLA defences are so thin. The Nigerian Commandos advance in the southern Cameroon rainforests have largely been stopped by what they thought was a massive line of dug-in GLA forces and strongholds. Once the intel has reached the high command, orders were to stay put and to not advance any further. The forces stayed put, skirmishing with the GLA. Machine guns fired suppressing fire into the distance, and snipers picked off officers and high-priority targets. This went on for hours until the sun came up, and now, it was time for the main attack to begin. 0800 Hours, Cameroon, The Zone
At exactly 8:00, the morning of the 31st, the Chinese began a huge barrage of artillary fire. Over 300 heavy guns opened fire at the same time, and rained down devastating solid and high-explosive shells onto the entire GLA front. These were not the specialized Inferno or Nuke Cannons the Chinese used in many previous engagements, but rather old-fashioned simple guns. General (Class AA) Qiang, the man in overall charge of the operation, knew that they needed to advance quickly through the jungle terrain. Risking massive forest fires or nuclear fallout would severely slow down, and possibly endanger his own forces, on top of being a PR disaster. The shells fell upon the poor GLA defenders. The earth shook, as the heavy barrage pounded and pounded, and would not stop pounding. Equipment and bodyparts were thrown left and right, dust and dirt were kicked into the air, choking the men still standing. The barrage lasted an agonizing ninety minutes, with over 60,000 shells spent. Then, at 0930 Hours, the guns fell silent. Explosions were no longer heard, however, a sort of rumble was felt. It was the Chinese and Nigerian forces, beginning their advance. The main assault has begun.

"Radio for General Qiang. Sir, they're requesting you in person." A private brought a tattered radio to the General. A voice began to speak: "Please, Commander Qiang, stop your bombardments! We are lucky to be alive at all. This base contains no GLA militia, only the front lines! We are just Civilians here. I beg of you, stop!" Behind the base itself, 2000 Militia mobilized into two. flanking positions, hidden well by the jungle. One prepared to attack the artillery position, the other scattered itself within the jungle, knowing that though they were outnumbered by at least 6-1, their position was advantageous in two ways. The first, they would have be able to stay hidden and covered. The second, they could see the exact movements of the Chinese forces.
Attacks from the side would force the Chinese to stop their advance, and with that, they would be a stationary target for artillery. And if they did not stop their advance, they would suffer great casualties from the Militia themselves. A win-win for a casual megalomaniac.

After the message was heard, he gave the soldier back his radio receiver. The soldier gave him a worried look. General Qiang looked back at his subordinate sternly. "Civilians? In a GLA military compound? I can hardly believe it." He turned to the rest of his staff. "Well? What do you guys make of it?" "I'm not sure", said one of his officers. "Maybe we should stop shelling the fort?" "Nonsense," said Brigadier-General Tanhuo, "The GLA are playing tricks on us. They always do. There is no reason for civilians to be taking refuge in such an obvious target. I say we should continue the shelling as planned" General Qiang shook his head. "This campaign is as much for PR and diplomacy than it is for capturing territory. Bring me radio communicator, I wish to speak with these so-called civilians before making up my mind. "
"Hello? Hello? This is General Class AA Qiang of the 3rd African Army. Who are you, and why are you in a GLA military compound?"

"Please sir, we've been captured by the GLA. We snuck in this radio, but it's not long before they get over to our cell! Please General, we will be killed if you don't help us." A loud whipping noise and blood-curdling scream was heard, and then some loud speech in a language the Chinese could not understand, followed by a gunshot. The radio was picked up. "You must understand! Our friend wanted more food, and they shot him! They have taken us away from our families, from our children... sir, we beg of you-" The radio cut off.

"Order the 22nd Artillery Battalion to redirect its fire to the GLA trench positions to the right of the base," His officers looked stunned. "General Qiang," said Brigadier-General Tanhuo, "You must not let your emotions get in the way of the operation! I thought you-" The Chief Commander interrupted him. "These civilians have strategic importance, as they can tell us where the enemy is. Remember, our aerial photos cannot see through the denser parts of the jungle. If we can evacuate these civilians, they can provide us with valuable intelligence. Plus, we can let the media capitalize on this as well. This will surely give us more support both from home, and abroad. Believe me, I know what I'm doing." His officers were silenced, but they still had a look of concern. "Right," said Tanhuo, "You make a valid point. What are your orders then? Should we send in the Nigerian Commandos to capture the base and evacuate the civilians?" "Yes, of course. Tell the commander of the Nigerian 18th Commando Platoon about our plan. He is to begin this operation as soon as possible." "Yes, sir!" 0904 Hours, July 31st, 2045 Cameroon, The Zone
Unfortunatley for 18th Platoon, their commander was a casulty. He was shot in the head by a GLA sniper during the dig-in phase of the commando operation. Who assumed command, was none other than Sergeant Victor Adeyemi.
"Understood", he radio'ed back. He then took out his commander's radio, and began to brief his men on the operation.
Ten minutes later, the operation began. A section of ten men began taking positions near the north-west wall of the compound. The north-west wall had a small opening, where an artillery shell had hit it. It seemed like an obvious place to start.
There were two snipers in that section, that began firing on the machine gunners on the walls and towers. Soon the entire west-wall was suppressed.

It was almost time for the plan to come into full fruition. However, General Qiang was no fool, and would see the ploy soon, almost certainly. Even so, time to begin. "Artillery flank, move out!" A hoard of militia tore across open ground, expecting to see HMGs guarding the artillery emplacements. Instead, they had open ground to run with almost no threat. Few soldiers offered resistance; they were not expected so far out. Resultantly, they were able to overwhelm the operators quickly, and coming from behind, no radio contact was made with the Chinese general. By 09:17, the artillery positions were re-manned by GLA soldiers. 2 Minutes later, the radio call was given to send in the 1000 men on the other flank, from within the jungle, to disrupt, and possibly destroy the forces attacking the west side of the base. These men struck from the jungle, countering the enemy heat sensors with guerrilla tactics, and minimal losses were suffered before the Chinese forces fell back.
A radio transmission was sent to General Qiang. "Please General, sit tight. We're sending a little search party over to... have a word with you. Don't worry, they shell by very sensitive for you. Oh please, at least give me a groan of derision."
The Enigma was so happy with himself, he began to sing: "'Cause you're too sexy beautiful...' I'd better record this transmission. I want to add the screams."

0918 Hours, July 31st 2045 Cameroon, The Zone
One of General Qiang's communications staff officers came running towards the central command table. "I have just received reports that the 12th and 13th Artillary Battalions were under attack by a GLA sneak attack! They have fallen back, but were unable to destroy the artillery pieces in time." He quickly glanced at his main map, then turned to one of his radio operators. "Send in the nearby 82nd Infantry Regiment waiting in reserve. Their orders are to recapture the lost artillery divisions." One of his staff officers pointed out "Sir, we should send in more reserves to protect the rest of our artillery divisions!" "Right," he replied before turning to another radio officer, "Tell the 52nd and 53rd Infantry Regiments to take positions near the north wing of the main Artillery Division." Much of his staff seemed worried. "No matter," said the General. There's only ten minutes before the barrage was supposed to end anyway. This is exactly what the reserve infantry regiments are for, to protect the artillery. I don't know why there was nobody guarding the artillery, and how the GLA managed to sneak past our main force, but it is of little matter. Prepare yourselves, the main thrust shall begin soon." ----- Meanwhile, the commandos civilian evacuation operation was stopped completley by a flanking attack with almost a thousand GLA rebels coming in from the north. Though a section of ten men were instructed to suppress the main wall, the main attack was to come from the northeast. Sergeant Victor Adeyemi heard the machine gun fire from a distance, and knew that they were being overrun. If those men were to fall back, then the main attack would be cut off, and the whole operation would've been a bust. He called for a halt of current operations to deal with this new threat. His men fell back, and set up positions to counterattack the GLA rush. The commandos knew they were up against a lot of opposition, so many set up their light machine guns, and began to suppress the GLA attackers, slowing them down to a crawl. Adeyemi knew that his platoon of 45 commandos cannot defeat a GLA force of hundreds. He radio'd back to HQ: "This is Sergeant Victor Adeyemi of the 18th Commando Platoon. The GLA have ambushed and attacked us in very large numbers. It is dangerous for us to proceed with the operation before the main attack. I must put this operation on hold until the GLA attackers are defeated, or until the base is liberated in some other way. Over" It was a real dissapointment. Adeyemi thought he could proves himself a capable commander with his sneaky diversion tactic he thought of for this operation. Unfortunately, it would not come to pass. He would just have to wait for the main attack.

"Keep pushing! It matters not if we ourselves die, for we shall fall under the glorious flag of the GLA!" The West flank continued their charge. The stolen artillery began to bombard as soon as possible. There was no time to waste mocking China, for that in itself could be their downfall. Both artillery divisions struck as hard as they could on positions preemptive to the estimated location of Chinese forces on impact. This, in concept, was a good idea. However, being controlled by simple-minded GLA militia, the shots were random and few hit the target at all. Soon, they gave up, and destroyed the Artillery, making for the dense jungle once more. This time, they rendezvoused with the west flank. There was now no doubt that the GLA's sheer force here would overwhelm the majority of the forces here. The Rocket buggies on the hill behind the base began to attack, acting as the cover fire that the captured artillery were meant to have been.
Having overwhelmed the suppression forces, the Militia began to notice a much larger force of Chinese commandos attacking their base from the northeast. They radioed in to the General on the ground, and as such the Rocket Buggies were repositioned to attack these assailants.
Within the base, fallback plan NO.2 was being put into action.

0930 Hours, July 31st 2045 Cameroon, The Zone "It's time.", said General Qiang, as multiple bells and alarms began to ring. "The main assault begins NOW!" His staff officers were frozen, as many began nail biting and sweating. They have been planning this operation for months, and now, it will be put into action. At exactly 9:30, the Chinese artillery bombardment stopped completley, but a rumble was still heard. As men looked towards the sound beyond the jungles of Cameroon, they began to realize, that it was the enemy. The main force consisted of seven divisions, with almost two hundred thousand men. Three infantry divisions attacked the south, where the rainforest was dense, and four Mechanized & Motorized divisions attacked further north, where the vegetation of the decidious forest was much lighter. Another attack was planned in Northern Nigeria, where the 29th Motorized Division would race towards Chad, capturing the GLA bulge, but this attack was cancelled at the last minute, when intelligence began to report ECA military withdrawing. Instead, the two mobile units will be used to cover the flank of the southern attack. The divisions were all accompanied by Inferno Cannons and mortar-firing siege squads, however they were loaded with conventional HE and shrapnel shells, so as to prevent forest fires from stalling or damaging the attack. It was their job to deal with enemy Grads and Rocket Buggies. The commandos accompanied the attackers, and relayed important scouting information back to the commanders. This along with listening outposts and other recon units helped the assault forces have decent battlefield awareness in all but the densest of jungle regions. "This is Sergeant Victor Adeyemi of the 18th Commando Platoon. My snipers have spotted a rocket buggy group at your one oclock, range 6000." "Roger that,", replied the siege company commander, who then ordered his mortars to fire. A shell fell next to one of the buggies, the shrapnel shattering the window and wounding the crew inside. They quickly ramped up their engines and fell back. ----- Meanwhile, the infantry division has managed to push the GLA jungle ambushers back into the jungle just as the attack was beginning. "Those GLA bastards have destroyed our cannons!", radioed one of them, "We must have lost the equivalent of three whole Artillery battalions in this one attack. Advise having more protection for artillery in the future, over!"

"Soldiers, hold position. Until we get orders, we stay here." A message similar to this appeared around the base and many of the forces in Cameroon. A sense of resounding concern arose among the forces, on the ground and under the ground, within the base. Their commander had made no attempt to contact the forces, and soon casualties were heavy, and chaos began to erupt within the forces. The Zone was ignored by the GLA for several hours, until the stroke of 11AM arrived, and new orders came through. By this time, forces had been shattered by the Chinese armada, and the battle was about to end. However, the order that came through was not one of reclamation. Quite simply, it said: "You must hold your ground at all costs. Begin final resort soldiers. We're going in for a last stand." Panic fell upon GLA militia, and the battle seemed at a loss. The only hope lay in forces that were yet days away.
The Enigma began to write a letter.

1128 Hours, July 31st 2045 Cameroon, The Zone Engines roared as the Troop Crawlers from the Motorized Divisions sped through the forest. The Infantry further south was having a much slower assault, due to the denser forest. GLA ambushes and Guerilla tactics have been slowing them down, but thanks to previous war experience, and the jungle training provided by the Vietnamese Jungle Troopers, the Chinese and Nigerian infantry are still managing to push the GLA further and further back. Sergeant Victor Adeyemi noticed something different at the start of around 11 oclock, during his advance in the south. The GLA began to resist, and resist fiercely. The enemy, who was running and surrendering for most of the morning, suddenly began to fight tooth and nail. They were fighting fanatically to the death. Though this meant that the GLA would be massacred more often, this also took a large toll on the attackers. Could this be because they were now beginning to encounter battle-hardened GLA elites? Or was it because their leader threw down the imfamous 'not one step back' order? Fighting continued through the afternoon, but this time, casulties began to mount on both sides. Though the GLA were often out-gunned, and out-maneuvered, they still managed to resist fanatically and inflict casulties. The Chinese and Nigerian forces began the morning with the loss of only a few hundred men, the casulties for the afternoon numbered nearly a thousand. Despite this, the Attackers advanced relentlessly, capturing the villages of Kumba, Bamenda, and Bafoussam. Some villagers were very co-operative towards the Chinese, giving the troops food and supplies, while others ambushed the attackers from inside their homes. After the capture of a major village, Chinese engineers erected small military outposts and speaker towers, which broadcasted anti-GLA propaganda for the villagers to hear. 2128 Hours, July 31st 2045 Cameroon, The Zone By nighttime, the Chinese-Nigerian forces approached the port city of Douala, the largest city in old Cameroon. This city was of much strategic importance to the entire operation, and was one of the first major goals. The attack went much better than expected, and the schedule for the attack on Douala was bumped up to tomorrow. The next morning, the attack shall begin.
