Biography:
General Sergei Varennikov is the grandson of Valentin Ivanovich Varennikov, a Russian Army general and politician, best known for being one of the planners and leaders of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, as well as one of the instigators of the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt. His grandfather also fought in the Battle of Stalingrad, tok part in the liberation campagin in Eastern Europe, as wel as in the Battle of Berlin as one of the commanders of the Soviet soldiers who captured the Reichstag.
His father, Vladimir Varennikov is a retired general, politician and an Afghan war veteran.
General Varennikov was born in Omsk, Omsk Oblast, Russia. He was living in a normal family, and he started showing interest in the army from young age. When he finished high school, he moved to Moscow and started his career in the army. Most of his work is classified. He is a charismatic, honorable and very strict soldier with high moral standards, and he demands the same from his subordinates. It is rumored that he refused orders several times, for unknown reasons.
