Welcome back to FFN. Yesterday, President Andrey Voronov of the Russian Federation surprised the world by flying to a conference in Tehran to negotiate an ascension of Iran, Kurdistan, Syria, and Afghanistan to the Collective Security Treaty Organization, voicing their desire for increased national security.
After the nuclear bombings of Vatican City, and, more worryingly for the Middle East, the Holy City of Mecca, Iran was shocked and began drifting away from the MEC, following their complete and utter failure to stop or even uncover the planning of the bombings, dissenting within the alliance for much better security. They were not alone, with Kurdistan, Syria, and Afghanistan also voicing their discomfort within the MEC. Now, all four countries seek to exit the MEC and ascend to the CSTO, hoping that the superpower status of Russia will shield them from GLA terrorism.
Supreme Leader of Iran, Sayyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei was reported to have said "The protection of the Iranian people is the government's top priority, which cannot be achieved with the weakness of the MEC. However, the CSTO can and will protect us from whatever horrors foreign terrorists wish to bring to our great Islamic nation." The leaders of the nations of Afghanistan and Kurdistan similarly expressed discomfort in their current alliance and the desire to join the CSTO. The Assad family in Syria is also seeking to enter the CSTO for protection, aided by the fact that over the years the Assad family and Russian presidents have had great relations.

Saudi Arabia, a regional power, and other MEC nations have urged the 4 nations to reconsider and not to seek CSTO protection, but to no avail. Generally, popular opinion is for CSTO ascension in all countries seeking it.
On the 12th of August, President Voronov, Chairman of the CSTO, flew to Tehran to negotiate CSTO membership for all four countries: Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, and Kurdistan. All four countries seem to plan to exit the MEC soon if all goes well. Should the talks succeed, then Russia will gain a few new grateful allies and partners.
This is your host, Katherina Ulyanova, FFN on our top news story tonight. After we take a quick break, we'll move on to the hockey regional finals, and then the showdown between leaders in New York City.
[OOC: If there is no one to stop me in a week, then consider these 4 nations now CSTO and out of the MEC.]
