With relations between Russia and Europe deteriorating, it comes to no surprise that the Russian people have voiced their concerns publicly as the work of the Anglo-European Defense Pact and its "Solaris" clean-energy satellite network. When Russian President Dmitry Molchanov called for a security summit in the United Nations to discuss on Solaris, he and his evidence that Solaris was behind a recent heatwave across Russian territory were rebutted and denied by AEDP Supreme Commander Sir Archibald Stanford. So, why does Russia hate Europe right now, and what does Solaris have to do with it? Well, the answer is not nearly as simple as, say, why Russia hated the US more back in the early 2000s than now.
Before the "real-life Militaires Sans Frontières" of Europe, better-known as the Anglo-European Defense Pact was formed in 2034, the European Union was falling apart. After a series of protest resignations from the economic union by the British Isles, most famously known as the "Brexit," the European Union was on the brink of collapse. Rather than fall into anarchy, the remaining countries of the EU came together and formed the European Continental Alliance: a defensive military alliance similar to NATO that was meant to unify Europe. However, this alliance did not last either and all of its assets were absorbed into what we know as the Anglo-European Defense Pact in 2036. So, what does Russia have to do with this union? Well, for starters, trade.
The Global War on Terror saw many of Europe's own oilfields and power stations destroyed by the infamous Global Liberation Army. While China provided repair aid through cheap credits in exchange for military bases being built in the area, Europe still had to keep up its supplies, and turned to Russia in the aftermath. Russia gave Europe oil, natural gas, coal, and other forms of fossil fuel, which helped not only Europe, but Russia begin to reinvigorate its economy. However, when the "Solaris Solar Energy Relay & Power Distribution" Project came into effect in 2039 after its first major satellite was activated, Europe no longer saw a dependence for Russian fossil fuels and terminated the trade agreements that had been present since the collapsing of the European Union.
As a result, the Russian economy took a serious blow, as fossil fuels were their major export, and many of the world's countries no longer utilized fossil fuels as a major energy source. Both Presidents Andrey Voronov and Dmitry Molchanov had to deal with the consequences of this as well. Without a strong economy, Russia's conflicts against the resurgent GLA in Africa started to crash and burn, starting with the attack on a research & development facility in Kurmuk, Sudan by China and North America. After a series of GLA attacks on their clients, they had to call Europe for assistance, dealing a heavy blow to national pride. Coupled with recent events starting in 2044 about a massive heatwave in Russia supposedly caused by the heat of concentrated solar energy from Solaris relays above Russian soil, the people had it and demanded satisfaction.
So, why does Russia seem to hate the West, specifically Europe, more than ever? Well, it's a combination of different factors. The first and foremost is the cancelling of their long-standing trade agreements between Russia and European countries that were paying for the AEDP's protection. The second was the massive blow to Russian national pride in having to ask Europe for assistance after the collapse of their economy. Finally, the rumors revolving around Solaris and how it is a danger to the Russian people and their property, supposedly costing hundreds of millions countrywide for damages.
